West Ham’s strange fixture scheduling could decide fate of their season

West Ham are seeking redemption next season after a disappointing maiden campaign at the London Stadium and the Hammers will discover their fixture list for the forthcoming Premier League season tomorrow, when the fixtures for 2017/18 are released.

Slaven Bilic’s side have plenty of work to do this summer if they are to claw their way up the Premier League standings and battle for a spot in European competitions- and the fixture list will play a huge part in the Hammers’ campaign.

West Ham will be hoping for favourable fixtures in key stages of the Premier League season; including the start of the new campaign, the busy festive period and the final weeks of the season at the end of April and start of May next season.

The Hammers would also like to see huge clashes with the likes of both Manchester sides, Liverpool, Chelsea, Spurs and Arsenal spread out evenly, which is unlikely anyway, but the fact that West Ham face a strange start to the new campaign could have drastic effects on their season.

Due to the World Athletic Championships being held at the London Stadium in August, West Ham have been granted special dispensation by the Premier League to play their first three games of the new season away from home- something Liverpool did last season as they completed the rejuvenation of their main stand.

This could go one of two ways for the Hammers, as Bilic’s side could embark on a fantastic start to the season and return to the London Stadium with the form to continue their push, or a slow start away from home could put the pressure on them for their return to East London.

It’s highly likely that West Ham will face at least one of the Premier League’s top-six away from home in the first few matches of the season and this could also be a good or a bad thing- as the fixture will be out of the way quickly but they could find themselves playing catch-up to their rivals.

West Ham’s poor home form last season may suggest that starting the campaign with three matches away from home is a good thing but the scenario is likely to be different next season. With the London Stadium still failing to feel like home, the Hammers would certainly benefit from returning to their stadium immediately.

Unfortunately for West Ham, this is something they’ll have to contend with due to their agreement allowing them to play at the London Stadium but the first three games of the campaign could set the path for the entire season for the Hammers.
