West Ham and Chelsea will have the chance to sign Lyon attacking midfielder Rayan Cherki for only €20m (£17m), according to Foot Mercato.

The French website claims that both London clubs were interested in signing the 20-year-old last summer. However, no deal was agreed at the time and the player remained with the Ligue One side.

Cherki’s situation has, though, changed. He has had a very difficult start to the season and, combined with the fact that his contract is set to expire in just over 18 months’ time, Lyon are now willing to sell for a cut price.

Foot Mercato report that neither West Ham nor Chelsea have so far “come forward officially” to revive their move for the France Under 21 international, but that could still change before the January transfer window.

Cherki has failed to perform in a struggling team

The Frenchman’s numbers don’t make for good reading. This campaign, he has scored 0 goals and contributed only 1 assist in 14 appearances.

Cherki’s form typifies what has been a disastrous season for Lyon so far. They currently sit bottom of Ligue One, having picked up just 7 points from 14 matches.

West Ham may prioritise a move for an out-and-out forward instead

Cherki is usually deployed as a no.10 or on the wings. With the club having recruited the likes of Mohammed Kudus and James Ward-Prowse in the summer, those are not positions that manager David Moyes needs to strengthen.

The focus for January is believed to be on signing a new No.9. A host of players have been linked with a move to the London Stadium. RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner and Paris Saint-Germain’s Hugo Ekitike have both been tipped to join the Irons on loan, while Feyenoord’s Santiago Gimenez, Stuttgart’s Serhou Guirassy and Bournemouth’s Dominic Solanke have been mentioned as potential targets for permanent transfers.
