Journalist Reveals Ex Chelsea Star “Won’t Fancy” Move As West Ham Are Dealt Setback In Striker Search

West Ham have not been given any encouragement in their pursuit of RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones confirmed that the Hammers are interested in signing the German international but the player is not believed to be keen on a switch to the London Stadium:

“They are looking to explore the situation just in case Timo Werner is willing to come to the Premier League. At the moment, I don’t think they’ve had a clear answer on that.”

“But the indications are that Werner won’t fancy it. If that’s the case, West Ham will continue to look elsewhere.”

Werner had two difficult years at Chelsea

After moving to Stamford Bridge for £47.6m in the summer of 2020, the striker struggled to replicate the form he showed in Germany, scoring just 23 goals in 89 appearances for the Blues.

Werner was sold to Leipzig at the start of last season for almost half the price. Despite having a decent first year back at the Red Bull Arena, hitting the back of the net 16 times in all competitions, he has struggled to get minutes this campaign. It is thought that he would still prefer to stay in Germany even if he does move teams in January.

Who could West Ham sign instead?

The Hammers have been linked with a host of different forwards in recent months, including Feyenoord’s Santiago Gimenez, Bournemouth’s Dominic Solanke and Chelsea’s Armando Broja.

One of the more recent links, though, has been to Paris Saint-Germain’s Hugo Ekitike. The Frenchman will be available on loan next month and, due to West Ham having to be careful about not falling foul of FFP rules, an approach for the 21-year-old may well be the most realistic option.
