The Five Worst Premier League Players Signed From Championship Clubs This Season

With the current season coming to an end very soon, we have decided to assess the signings that have been made by Premier League teams.

The Championship is usually a league where bargains can be found, but in recent years, there have been more and more cases where clubs have shelled out on players who failed to make the grade in the top flight.

Sometimes clubs simply try to take advantage when clubs are relegated, while there are other instances where footballers simply can’t bridge the gap.

Press the next page as we look at the worst signings from the Championship that Premier League clubs have made this campaign.

5) Karlan Grant (West Brom)

The Baggies spent £15m to sign the striker from Huddersfield in October but he has barely featured since February, with manager Sam Allardyce preferring January loan signing Mbaye Diagne instead.

Grant’s only goal for West Brom came in only his second league game for the club, scoring in a 1-1 draw with Brighton. He hasn’t hit the back of the net in his last 16 appearances.

4) Jamal Lewis (Newcastle)

It was seen as a coup by the Magpies when they snapped up the left-back for £15m back in September. Liverpool had also been after the player so the fact that he ended up St James’ Park made it seem like a smart purchase by manager Steve Bruce.

However, Lewis has struggled to make an impact and he lost his place at the beginning of March, having been an unused substitute in Newcastle’s last nine games.

3) Aaron Ramsdale (Sheffield United)

The Blades were very keen to sign a replacement for Dean Henderson so they splashed out £18.5m on the Bournemouth keeper last summer. It is fair to say that things haven’t gone to plan.

Although Ramsdale has improved in recent weeks, he made a number of errors early in the season, which undoubtedly aided the club’s sharp decline that left them rooted to the bottom of the table.

2) Said Benrahma (West Ham)

The Hammers looked to have been smart when they opted for a “try before you buy” deal for the Algerian international, taking him on an initial loan ahead of a possible £25m purchase.

However, despite Benrahma having struggled to establish himself under manager David Moyes, West Ham triggered their option to buy him in order to free up a domestic loan space for Jesse Lingard.

1) Nathan Ake (Manchester City)

It was a surprise when the Citizens decided to snap up the Dutchman for £41m from Bournemouth in the summer, and he has hardly played since making the switch to the Etihad Stadium.

A hamstring injury kept Ake out for the best part of two months, while the form of John Stones and Ruben Dias means he has not been afforded much game time when fit.
