Jenas Questions West Ham Marksman And Calls On Club To Sign New Number Nine

TV pundit Jermaine Jenas believes West Ham must replace Marko Arnautovic at the end of the season.

The Austrian international hasn’t been the same player since the January transfer window when he was unsettled by a bid from China.

Jenas doesn’t think Arnautovic has downed tools, but he believes his lack of form has highlighted that he isn’t a natural number nine. The former Newcastle and Tottenham midfielder believes a new first-choice striker should be a priority this summer:

“Arnautovic is a top player, but he doesn’t think like a striker. His first thought is never ‘Get in that six-yard box, find those scrappy goals, those tap-ins’. He’s always drifting towards the edge of the box, you’re not going to score goals there.”

“I wouldn’t say he’s sulking but he just doesn’t quite make the runs. To progress, I think they need to go and find a new number nine.”

Arnautovic has scored eight goals in 27 appearances for the Hammers this season, but he hasn’t scored for the club since the 2-0 win over Birmingham City in the FA Cup back in early January.

The two likeliest candidates to replace him are believed to be ex-Manchester City star Edin Dzeko and Celta Vigo’s Maxi Gomez. The former has just a year left on his contract at Roma while the latter reportedly has a €25m release clause.
