Why this controversial West Ham deal could be just what they need

West Ham and Chelsea have never been the best of friends – that was more than evident with the ugly scenes in their EFL Cup tie at the London Stadium earlier this season, although there was no trouble in the league fixture earlier in 2017.

With that in mind, the announcement that Blues captain John Terry will be leaving the club at the end of this season after 22 years and over 700 games for the west Londoners, will not have interested too many Hammers fans.

However, their manager Slaven Bilic has been rather forthright in his admission that there could be a move for the former England captain from him this summer.

Whilst it may be a tricky deal to pull of in terms of club loyalties, it wouldn’t be too hard in terms of the logistics for Terry, who is reportedly keen to stay in his Surrey home, making a London move the more probably choice.

Furthermore, although it may not be the most popular move amongst the fan base to bring in a Chelsea legend, with Bilic already under fire from some corners of the London Stadium, it could make all the difference to their performances next season.

The Hammers have endured a tough start to life in their new Stratford home, meaning stability is what’s needed to improve next time around. Having made a mess of their summer dealings ahead of this season, Premier League experience is a must for most additions this time around, something Terry has in abundance.

The Blues skipper could well be an ideal man to have in the squad as they look to kick of their new era at the London Stadium in earnest, bringing stability to a back line that, even with the addition of Euro 2016 Champion Jose Fonte, has looked far from secure at times this season.

With just shy of 500 Premier League appearances under his belt, as well as a host of trophies at the highest level across his career, Terry could be exactly what Bilic, a former defender himself, needs over the next couple of years to develop his side, and bring in the likes of Reece Oxford, a player around which there is much excitement in east London, up to the next level of their development.

Furthermore, Terry is well on his way to becoming a top coach, having trained for his badges over the last couple of seasons, and takes his involvement at youth level very seriously, something that despite his ties to Stamford Bridge would be likely appreciated by Hammers fans, who are proud of their club’s history in terms of academy graduates.

It may not be the most popular of choices, but John Terry could well be a fantastic move for West Ham should Bilic pull it off.
