Why a move for this Premier League veteran ticks all the boxes for West Ham

It has been a long and tough season for West Ham fans. Having left behind their beloved Upton Park for a new home at the London Stadium in Straford it was always going to be a strange year, however, trouble on and off the pitch as well as star man Dimitri Payet deciding halfway through the season that he wanted out, it has been worse than many could have imagined.

There have been plenty of issues for Hammers fans this term, one of the main sticking points, however, has been the lack of investment in two alarmingly weak positions, up top and at right-back.

Simone Zaza was supposedly the answer to all problems up top, however, after no goals in eleven outings he was sent packing in January, meanwhile the addition of former Real Madrid and Spain full-back Alvaro Arbeloa has been a disaster, with his most famous appearance in east London being in a local pub.

With that in mind, a huge concern for the London Stadium faithful this summer, is who is going to be brought in to bolster that right back slot.

Sam Byram is a good long-term option, however, having failed to get a solid run in the side due to suspension and injury throughout his West Ham career, something must be done in the short-term.

Recent reports ahead of the summer window opening have suggested that Slaven Bilic could be considering a move for Premier League veteran, Manchester City’s Bacary Sagna.

The former Arsenal man, who has an FA Cup and League Cup to his name, looks to be on his way out of The Etihad this summer, as Pep Guardiola looks to add some new faces to his defensive line.

Whilst the France international is not exactly in the prime of his career, at 34, he still has a lot to offer a side, especially one with a back line such as West Ham’s which has struggled with experience this season.

Despite the addition of former Southampton captain Jose Fonte, who has been in the top flight since 2012, something is still lacking in that back four.

A couple of years with the experience of Sagna added to the Hammers defence could do wonders for the likes of Byram, and even youngsters such as Reece Oxford, as they are given time to work with someone who has effectively seen it all in the Premier League.

It may not be an attractive deal, or a big money one, however, it could make all the difference over the coming years for those in east London.
