Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville praised the performance of West Ham United in the wake of their 2-1 away win against Luton Town on Friday evening.
Neville lauded the quality of the Hammers’ spine – players such as Edson Alvarez, Lucas Paqueta, Kurt Zouma, Michail Antonio and James Ward-Prowse were all given their flowers.
Moreover, Neville also mentioned that he believes the Hammers can have a ‘really good season’, but said that they will need to build on their positive performances to do so.
In the game against the Hatters, Jarrod Bowen opened the scoring in the first half – Zouma sealed the deal on the 85th minute with a headed effort, despite Luton threatening to stage a late comeback after Mads Anderson scored in added time.
What did Neville say on Sky Sports?
Speaking on Sky Sports on Friday evening, Neville said: “I was impressed with the spine of West Ham all the way through. If you look at [Michail] Antonio at the top and [Kurt] Zouma at the back.
“Then you’ve got Alvarez and Ward-Prowse in there and obviously you’ve got [Lucas] Paqueta just floating around, I think it’s a real strong spine that they’ve got there.
“And David Moyes was obviously under massive pressure at the end of last season going into that final because he’d had a difficult Premier League (season). He looks like he’s got something he can really build on. They can have a really good season.”
Can West Ham capitalise on their strong start to the season?
The Hammers have had a brilliant start to the 2023/24 Premier League campaign – so far, from foru games, they have three wins and a solitary draw.
After a stalemate against Bournemouth in the first game of the season, Irons fans were not holding out hope for an inspiring season – but, even without Declan Rice, West Ham have looked very impressive so far.
However, West Ham face a very tough challenge in their next game, as they square off against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City on September 16. It will be a real acid test for David Moyes’ men – are they up to the task?
