West Ham have not ruled out an approach for RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner ahead of the January transfer window, according to 90min.com.
The website claims that the German international is likely to be on the move in the New Year, and he could well return to London.
Chelsea signed Werner for £47,5m from Leipzig in 2020 but they cut their losses by selling him back to the Bundesliga side last year. However, the forward has not managed to rediscover the form he showed in his first spell at the club.
This season, the 27-year-old has only scored 2 goals in 13 appearances, but he has been limited to 4 starts, with manager Marco Rose preferring the strike partnership of Benjamin Sesko and Lois Openda.
Leipzig have already confirmed Werner’s potential exit
Director Rouven Schroder spoke out about the forward’s situation earlier this week, and he effectively opened the door for the German to leave the Red Bull Arena:
“Timo is going through a difficult spell, and we are supporting him. Life isn’t always sunshine. If he has the notion that he would like to do something else, then we will deal with it. He is a part of our team, and he has to face up to competition for places.”
West Ham will have rivals for Werner’s signature
90min.com report that both Fulham and Crystal Palace are also weighing up bids for the ex-Chelsea striker. However, both teams are said to be keen on a loan move, rather than a permanent transfer.
In terms of West Ham, the Irons are definitely in the market for a new no.9. Both Armando Broja and Feyenoord’s Santiago Gimenez have been mentioned as targets in recent weeks. Werner may have been added to the list of names and, with technical director Tim Steidten having strong connections in Germany, an offer for the Leipzig star could be on the cards.
