West Ham Given Big Boost With £31.5M Chelsea Defender Now ‘More Open’ To January Transfer

West Ham transfer target Ian Maatsen is “more open” to leaving Chelsea during the January transfer window, according to Football.London.

The Dutchman rejected a permanent move to Burnley in the summer, after the Clarets agreed a £31.5m transfer fee, but his lack of game time for the Blues in the first half of the season has led to a change of heart.

Maatsen has only started twice this campaign, and most of his minutes have been as a winger, rather than in his favoured position at left-back. It means he could be tempted by a move if the Hammers or Burnley come back in for him.

Football.London report that both teams are still “very keen” on the 21-year-old, along with other Premier League teams.

Maatsen will be on the market in January

Chelsea are also looking to get Maatsen off the club’s books. The Blues did trigger their option to extend his contract until 2025 but they were trying to protect the player’s value.

It is believed that any bids will be welcomed for the Netherlands Under 21 international as they look to raise funds for their own transfer business in the New Year.

West Ham need to strengthen the left flank

Aaron Cresswell’s poor performance in the 5-0 defeat to Fulham last weekend demonstrates that the Irons need more competition at left-back.

The 33-year-old is expected to leave the London Stadium soon anyway, having previously tried to force through a transfer to Wolves in the summer.

Emerson Palmieri has had an excellent season, but having Maatsen in the squad as well would certainly keep the Italian international on his toes.

It should also be pointed out that Maatsen can operate further forward if need be, which could prove very useful if manager David Moyes opts to use a back five in the future.
