West Ham Could Now Get Chelsea Star For Bargain Price After He Turned Down £31.5M Move

West Ham are expected to “revisit their interest” in Chelsea defender Ian Maatsen, according to TEAMTalk.

The Dutchman was linked with a move to the London Stadium during the summer transfer window, but it seems the Hammers are still keen on securing the left-back’s signature.

Maatsen’s contract expires at the end of this season and there are doubts over whether he will extend his current deal with the Blues.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side accepted a £31.5m bid from Burnley on deadline day last month, but the player decided against leaving Stamford Bridge.

Maatsen is reportedly still determined to make his first team breakthrough at Chelsea but his contract situation means his club will be forced into trying to sell him again in January unless he puts pen to paper on an extension.

West Ham could, therefore, snap up Maatsen for a bargain price in the New Year, if he is willing to move clubs.

There will be competition for Maatsen

TEAMTalk claim that Manchester City are also keeping tabs on the fullback’s situation, with the Premier League champions looking to strengthen their options on the left-hand side of defence.

Chelsea will, of course, be reluctant to sell to either West Ham or City but there is a danger that Maatsen could leave for a foreign club on a free transfer next summer so they may have no choice.

West Ham’s replacement for Cresswell

The Irons have been looking to replace Aaron Cresswell ever since he tried to force through a move to Wolves before the start of the season.

Emerson Palmieri has certainly stepped up to the plate as first-choice but Maatsen’s arrival would give the Italian more competition for his position in the starting eleven, whilst also facilitating Cresswell’s departure.
