Top Five Worst Goalkeepers Of The Premier League Era

There is no hiding place when you make a mistake as a goalkeeper. With an error likely to cost your team a goal, it isn’t a position for the faint-hearted.

Especially in the Premier League, where everyone in the world is watching, being a keeper is certainly not an easy job with all that scrutiny.

While some make it all look very simple, there are others who are very much out of their depth and buckle under the pressure

So, press the next page as we go through who we believe are the five worst keepers to play in the Premier League.

5) Tony Warner (Fulham)

After coming through the youth ranks at Liverpool, he made a name for himself as a solid keeper at Millwall. It led to a move to Craven Cottage in 2007 which he will want to forget.

His worst moment was when he dropped a throw-in which led to Bolton scoring. He then made another mistake versus Middlesbrough in the following game before losing his place in the side.

4) Roberto Jimenez (West Ham)

Even though the Spaniard’s escapades in goal for the Hammers were only very recent, his performances were so bad that he is already worthy of a place in the top five.

Whilst other keepers on this list were decent keepers who made mistakes, Roberto was simply a bad shot-stopper. In his eight Premier League games for West Ham, he conceded 17 goals and kept no clean sheets.

3) Massimo Taibi (Manchester United)

It is easy to forget that the Italian actually got man of the match on his debut against Liverpool, but he will always be remembered for conceding a goal through his legs in the 3-3 draw against Southampton.

After subsequently conceding five goals against Chelsea, he was hastily dropped and was sent back to Italy within a year of moving to Old Trafford.

2) Adam Bogdan (Bolton and Liverpool)

The Hungarian replaced Jussi Jaaskelainen in goal for Bolton during large parts of the 2011/12 season due to the Finnish international suffering from injury problems. He played 20 games for the Trotters, conceding five against Chelsea and letting in a goal from Everton keeper Tim Howard.

He was not a regular starter following the club’s relegation to the Championship but he still managed to get a switch to Liverpool in 2015. With the Reds, he made a number of errors, including one on his Premier League debut. He dropped a ball from a corner leading to Watford to score their opener in a 3-0 win. He managed only one more league start but he actually only left Merseyside on a permanent basis last summer after a number of loan spells away from Anfield.

1) Kostas Chalkias (Portsmouth)

The Greek was brought to England by Portsmouth in 2005. He had been Greece’s reserve keeper during their triumph at the 2004 European Championships just six months before and many thought it was a decent piece of business.

However, it was clear from the first game that Chalkias was not up to the standard required. His debut against fierce rivals Southampton saw him flap at a number of crosses, and in subsequent matches, he made a whole host of mistakes. After just six appearances, he was allowed to leave by mutual consent a year after arriving.
