TOP FIVE Clubs That Have Changed Their Manager The Most Times In Premier League History

Graham Potter

With the number of sackings in the Premier League this season having hit double figures, we have decided to look at the teams who have changed managers most frequently during the Premier League era.

The financial implications that come from being relegated or from losing out on the Champions League have made the positions of head coaches more precarious than ever.

Changing the man in the dugout has been looked upon as a quick fix to improve results. On some occasions, it works, but there are plenty of times where things don’t go to plan.

Press the next page as we count down the Premier League teams who have made the most managerial changes (according to Transfermarkt).

=2) Chelsea – 22

After the sacking of Graham Potter, the Blues have now moved into the top five, and they will go even higher up the list with their next appointment.

Up until the formation of the Premier League in 1992, the London club had only hired 17 managers in their ENTIRE HISTORY.

However, the tenures of Ken Bates, Roman Abramovich and Todd Boehly as owners have led to a veritable bloodbath of managerial sackings.

=2) Aston Villa – 22

The Villans may have won the European Cup in the past and they are one of the most prestigious clubs in English football, but they have had an eventful few decades.

They began the Premier League era by finishing second but their fortunes then changed massively and it ultimately led to their relegation to the Championship in 2016.

Villa have appointed six permanent managers over the past seven years, with their current boss Unai Emery having taken the reins back in November.

=2) Southampton – 22

The Saints have never been far away from a crisis over the past few decades. Financial turmoil even led to their relegation to the third tier of English football at one point.

‘Stable’ is not a word that you would use to describe the Saints and that is borne out by the number of managers that they have hired over the years.

Since returning to the top flight in 2012, they have had nine different head coaches, including the likes of Mauricio Pochettino, Ronald Koeman and Ralph Hasenhuttl.

=2) Tottenham – 22

With the exception of the aforementioned Pochettino, Spurs rarely keep with the same manager for more than one or two seasons.

Some of that has been down to the itchy trigger finger of owners, but the high expectations of supporters is definitely another important factor.

Since Pochettino’s sacking in 2019 alone, they have gone through four managers, if you also include their current interim boss Cristian Stellini.

1) Newcastle – 24

Much like with Tottenham, the expectations of fans has played a big role in the high turnover of managers at the Magpies.

There have also been some poor decisions made in terms of managerial choices by owners, but coaches have been sacked simply due to their antagonist relationship with supporters.

Under Eddie Howe, there seems to be a much stronger alignment between the coach and the fanbase but, whether that will continue if results change, we shall have to wait and see.
