15) Fernando Morientes (Real Madrid to Liverpool – £6.3m – 2005)

Fernando Morientes

Liverpool had lost Michael Owen to Real Madrid the summer before they signed the Spaniard and, with the player having scored 22 goals for Monaco during a loan spell, having helped them to the Champions League final, it seemed like a good deal.

However, Morientes arrived at Anfield in poor form, having failed to score in 13 games for Real, and his struggles continued in England, where he couldn’t adapt to the pace of the game. He moved to Valencia for £3m only 16 months later.
