Top 20 Worst Premier League Transfers In January PART TWO

After starting our series of articles last week, we will continue our look at the worst transfers to take place in the month of January.

Premier League clubs tend to have the resources to invest in the transfer market midway through the season if things aren’t going well.

However, while in the summer you have the time to scout and plan your targets carefully, things can be very different in the winter when teams are desperately looking for quick solutions to get themselves out of relegation trouble or improving their fortunes in general.

Press the next page as we count down our worst Premier League signings in January (numbers 16 to 13).

16) Duncan Ferguson (Everton to Newcastle United – £7m – 1999)

The Scottish hardman had been struggling with fitness issues before the Magpies snapped him up for a hefty fee. While he scored a brace on his debut against Wimbledon, he was then sidelined with injury.

Ferguson played only nine games in the second half of the 1998/99 season and spent just one more year with Newcastle before being sold back to Everton for £3.75m.

15) Fernando Morientes (Real Madrid to Liverpool – £6.3m – 2005)

Liverpool had lost Michael Owen to Real Madrid the summer before they signed the Spaniard and, with the player having scored 22 goals for Monaco during a loan spell, having helped them to the Champions League final, it seemed like a good deal.

However, Morientes arrived at Anfield in poor form, having failed to score in 13 games for Real, and his struggles continued in England, where he couldn’t adapt to the pace of the game. He moved to Valencia for £3m only 16 months later.

14) Jimmy Bullard (Fulham to Hull City – £5m – 2009)

The Tigers were hoping that the flamboyant midfielder would help them maintain their Premier League status, paying him approximately £50,000 a week for the privilege, but it didn’t go to plan.

A longstanding knee injury flared up on his debut and he only played 24 games for Hull over three seasons. He was loaned to Ipswich Town before he eventually left on a permanent basis.

13) Valerien Ismael (Strasbourg to Crystal Palace – £2.75m – 1998)

Remarkably, the French defender was the Eagles’ record signing for the best part of 15 years, but he spent just ten months in England before returning to France.

Ismael was supposed to help reinforce Palace’s defence but he was so poor that he only played 13 matches, with his side being relegated from the Premier League in the process. He went on to play for Bayern Munich and he is now West Brom’s manager.
