There has been a lot of praise this weekend, but West Ham must take advantage

West Ham’s 0-0 draw against Everton on Saturday may have been the most unspectacular encounter of the weekend, however, a fine performance from Salven Bilic’s side can give those in east London a lot to be happy about.

It has been a tough season for Hammers fans, having to adapt to life away from Upton Park and get settled in the London Stadium, whilst trouble continued on and off the pitch neither the support or players seemed to be accustom to their new surroundings.

Whilst Bilic’s side are effectively safe in the Premier League their form has been far from what Irons fans would have been expecting when they began their supposed new era in Stratford.

The showing to shut out Everton on Saturday was described afterwards by Bilic as a performance of “11 lions.”

While he also admitted that there was room for improvement in terms of their decision making and, of course, in front of goal it was a performance to be proud of for the east Londoners.

Going into the game, the Premier League’s top goalscorer, Romelu Lukaku, had bagged nine goals in 11 games against the Hammers, however, an outstanding defensive showing with three at the back and wing-back Arthur Masuaku hailing it as his best since joining the club, kept the Belgian quiet throughout and limited Ronald Koeman’s side to just one chance.

Having put in a strong showing, and still with big fixtures to come, Bilic’s side must do their absolute utmost to leave their fans with positive memories of the London Stadium at the end of this campaign as they prepare to really ramp things up next season.

The Hammers still have clashes with Tottenham and Liverpool to come in Stratford, both ties that could be huge in terms of the race for the title and the top four, as well as for those fans in claret and blue.

Little needs to be said in the build up to the London derby with Spurs and the fact that it has been moved to a Friday night, whilst baffling, will only increase the heat of the game. Furthermore, it is rare to find a West Ham v Liverpool fixture which is not full of excitement, the reverse fixture brought a 2-2 draw and a fine showing from Bilic’s side, however, they will be desperate to see out their home games on a high.

However, in order to enjoy the last month of the season, Bilic’s side need to now do what they have failed to all season, take a positive performance and build it into a spell of form. There have been plenty of occasions when a perfect performance and result have given optimism to the fan base, only to be followed up by a poor showing the next week and the Hammers are back to square one.

Should they be able to sharpen up in the final third and take Saturday’s defensive display with them, the last month of the season could well, at last, be a happy one for West Ham fans.
