The Top Five Underperforming Goalkeepers In The Premier League This Season (Based on xG)

Following our look at the players with the most key passes in the Premier League last week, we now switch our focus to the goalkeeping department.

Finding data that can assess a shot-stopper’s performance can be tricky, but there are some reliable metrics out there that can help us identify the worst-performing keepers.

Post-shot xG is a measurement that assesses how likely a goalkeeper is to save a shot. We can then subtract the actual goals conceded to see who is performing poorly. For this list, we have looked at players who have played at least 10 league games.

Press the next page as we go through the five Premier League goalkeepers who have underperformed the most this campaign (based on stats provided by fBRef).

5) Aaron Ramsdale – Sheffield United (-0.9)

The Blades spent £18.5m on the keeper in the summer and he struggled for form earlier in the campaign, which contributed to United’s woeful form.

Ramsdale has improved as the season has gone on but he is still performing poorly in terms of the shots on target he is conceding from.

4) Matthew Ryan – Brighton and Arsenal (-3.2)

The Australian international was the Seagulls’ number one at the start of the season but his performances were so bad that he was dropped for Robert Sanchez in December.

Arsenal snapped Ryan up on loan as Bernd Leno’s number two back in January and he has only played three games since then.

3) Rui Patricio – Wolves (-3.9)

The Portuguese number one has suffered a serious drop in form this campaign, and it is not a surprise that Wolves’ results have taken a nosedive as well.

Patricio has been a consistently good goalkeeper over the years, though, and you would expect him to get back to his best very soon.

2) Karl Darlow – Newcastle (-4.0)

The 30-year-old was Newcastle’s first-choice keeper for the first five months of the campaign, with Martin Dubravka sidelined with a heel injury.

Some of the praise Darlow received from pundits earlier in the season was not justified, and he was dropped for Dubravka in late February. The Magpies’ improved results since that decision are not a coincidence.

1) Alex McCarthy – Southampton (-6.1)

Astonishingly, despite being dropped on two occasions by Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl, the 31-year-old still remains the club’s number one.

McCarthy is by far and away the worst performing goalkeeper this campaign, having conceded six more goals than his post-shot xG says he should have done.
