The FIVE Hidden Gems That Could Be Unearthed At The European Championships

After going through the five potential stars who could emerge from this summer’s European Championships last week, this time we are looking at some of the less-heralded names.

Major tournaments generally spring a surprise or two; both in terms of an unexpected team who turns into a contender, or a player who seemingly comes out of nowhere to stamp his mark on the competition.

In our list, we have decided to predict some of the players who could well come to the attention of the wider public by performing for their countries.

Press the next page as we look at five hidden gems who could be discovered at the Euros this month.

Eljif Elmas

The North Macedonian playmaker has seven goals in 27 appearances for his country but he has barely featured at club level this season, having started just three league games for Napoli.

Elmas moved from Fenerbahce two years ago but he hasn’t made his mark yet in Italy. Even so, at the age of 21, he could well get himself a move with some performances in the group stages of the Euros.

Mikkel Damsgaard

The 20-year-old has only played three times for Denmark, but the Sampdoria winger made a big impact back in March, when he scored two goals and provided two assists in an 8-0 win over Moldova during a World Cup qualifier.

For his club, Damsgaard has been less prolific but he has still impressed, making 35 Serie A appearances as Sampdoria finished comfortably midtable under the guidance of Claudio Ranieri.

Kamil Jozwiak

The Polish international only joined Derby County back in September and, it must be said, he didn’t really make much of an impression during his first season in the Championship.

However, there were mitigating circumstances. Jozwiak has been playing in a struggling team, while at the international level he is lining up alongside Robert Lewandowski. He won’t start every game for Poland but he will make an impact from the bench.

Viktor Tsygankov

Ukraine are having somewhat of a renaissance in terms of developing young talent. Andriy Shevchenko’s side sailed through qualification, finishing top of their group ahead of Portugal, with Tsygankov scoring twice in an impressive 5-0 win over Serbia.

For his club, the winger is just coming off the back of a title win with Dynamo Kyiv, having scored 15 goals and provided nine assists in all competitions. The 23-year-old is currently carrying a calf injury so we shall see if he is fit enough to play in the group stages.

Tomas Suslov

There is a lot of hype surrounding the Slovakian international in the Netherlands where he impressed for FC Groningen last season, but his numbers (four goals and five assists) weren’t spectacular.

At 19 years of age, Suslov is believed to have a lot of potential and it will be interesting to see how he fares at the Euros.
