The Five Coaches Who Have Managed The Most Clubs In Premier League History

The Premier League is extremely tough to negotiate as a manager and it doesn’t tend to take too long to find out whether someone is capable of managing at such a high level.

However, over the past three decades, there have been some coaches whose reputations have led to them being appointed to roles at multiple different clubs.

There are three managers on this list who have actually managed five teams each so we have separated them based on who took charge of their fifth club first.

Press the next page as we list the five coaches to have managed the most Premier League sides.

5) Roy Hodgson – 5 Clubs

Hodgson actually made a name himself managing abroad initially, having coached Inter Milan even before getting his first job in the Premier League with Blackburn Rovers.

He went on to manage Fulham, Liverpool, West Brom and Crystal Palace before announcing his retirement from management at the end of last season.

4) Alan Pardew – 5 Clubs

The 60-year-old has probably managed more teams in the top flight than he probably deserved to. He did get West Ham promoted to the top flight, as well as guiding them to a FA Cup final.

However, he didn’t enjoy a great spell with Charlton Athletic, failing to avoid relegation. At Newcastle, he did receive the Premier League manager of the season award for finishing fifth, but his time at St James’ Park ended under a cloud. He had a similarly promising start at Crystal Palace before being sacked, and he lasted just four months in his last spell with West Brom.

3) Harry Redknapp – 5 Clubs

Redknapp’s first spell in the Premier League was with West Ham. He then had two successful stints at Portsmouth, sandwiched between a controversial period as manager of rivals Southampton who he got relegated with.

At Tottenham, he guided the London club to Champions League qualification for the first time and got them all the way to the quarter-finals in 2011. After leaving Spurs, he moved to QPR. He could not prevent their relegation but after helping them to promotion, he resigned after a very poor start to the season in 2015.

2) Mark Hughes – 6 Clubs

Like Pardew, how Hughes managed so many top-flight teams, considering his rather average track record, is a bit of a mystery. He did impress in his first stint at Blackburn, where he helped them to a sixth-place finish.

That led to an unsuccessful period in charge of Manchester City, followed by decent spells at Fulham and Stoke City. His last management role was at Southampton, where he guided them to safety before being sacked the very next season after a bad run of form.

1) Sam Allardyce – 7 Clubs

‘Big Sam’ has become known for his expertise at rescuing teams from relegation, but he started off in the Premier League with Bolton Wanderers, who he managed for eight years.

An unhappy period at Newcastle followed, before better stints in charge of both Blackburn and West Ham. He has also been tasked with saving Sunderland, Crystal Palace and Everton from the drop, which he did successfully. However, he wasn’t able to help West Brom avoid relegation last campaign.
