Supercomputer Predicts Where Every Club Will Finish In The 2023/24 Premier League Table

Pep Guardiola

We may only be four games into the Premier League season, but the stat boffins at Opta have already made some predictions about the final Premier League table.

Their supercomputer has run 10,000 simulations to assess every game that will be played between now and May, and they have come up with a final position for all 20 top-flight teams.

Of course, the data is pretty limited this early in the season but fans will still be intrigued to find out where their club are predicted to finish.

The 3 relegated teams

20th: Luton Town
19th: Sheffield United
18th: Everton

Not many will be surprised by the three clubs predicted to finish in the relegation places. Both Luton Town and Sheffield United have looked out of their depth since being promoted to the top flight.

Everton, meanwhile, have continued from where they left off last season, struggling to score goals and letting in too many.

The prospect of an imminent takeover by American owners could, however, change the Toffees’ fortunes, so Opta’s prediction could still change.

Narrowly missing out on the drop

17th: Burnley
16th: Bournemouth
15th: Wolverhampton Wanderers
14th: Nottingham Forest

All four of these clubs are likely to hover around the dropzone this season so their placing on this list does seem pretty fair.

Out of the three promoted teams, Vincent Kompany’s Burnley do look the most capable of getting results at this level, but they will have to tighten up at the back.

Both Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth have put in some impressive performances already, even though they haven’t always got the results they would have liked. Wolves do have the quality in their squad to keep themselves out of trouble so there is a decent chance that Gary O’Neil’s side will avoid the drop.

Mid-table mediocrity

13th: Fulham
12th: Chelsea
11th: Crystal Palace
10th: Brentford

The standout club here is, of course, Chelsea, who are predicted to finish 12th for the second successive season. Having lost 2 of their first 4 games, you can understand why the supercomputer has them finishing midtable at the moment.

However, after spending over £1bn on new signings over the last three transfer windows, such a position will be deemed unacceptable by the Blues’ American owners. You can’t see Mauricio Pochettino staying until the end of the campaign if midtable is all he can manage.

Fulham and Crystal Palace will, though, be happy with 13th and 11th place finishes respectively, while Brentford may be slightly disappointed if they don’t improve on their 9th place last season.

Top 10 competitors

9th: Aston Villa
8th: West Ham United
7th: Newcastle United
6th: Brighton & Hove Albion

The supercomputer seems to believe that Newcastle will drop out of the Champions League places this campaign, and that seems fair after Eddie Howe’s side’s disappointing start, with three defeats in four.

After losing some key players in the summer, it will be some achievement if Roberto De Zerbi guides his Brighton team to another 6th-place finish.

West Ham and Aston Villa fans may, though, be slightly disappointed if they only scrape into the top 10. Hammers fans, in particular, will hope for better after a strong start to the new season.

Champions League qualification

5th: Manchester United
4th: Tottenham Hotspur
3rd: Arsenal
2nd: Liverpool
1st: Manchester City

Due to the revamp of the Champions League, there is a decent chance that the top 5 will qualify for Europe’s premier competition this campaign.

Opta’s top 5 doesn’t provide a lot of surprises, with Manchester City expected to win yet another Premier League title. However, they do predict that Liverpool will continue their strong start and finish runners-up.

United are currently in turmoil behind the scenes so a fifth spot could be the best they can hope for. With Ange Postecoglou having revived Spurs’s fortunes, it appears the Australian could guide them into the top 4, just behind North London rivals Arsenal.
