FIVE Out Of Contract Players Who Are Starring For Their Countries At The European Championships

Following our look at the hidden gems who could emerge at the European Championships last week, we have now turned our attention to players who are nearing the end of their contracts.

Player values can skyrocket after performing well at a major tournament but there also others who are using the competition as a shop window to get themselves a new club.

Not every free transfer signing proves to be successful, of course, but we have singled out players on this list who could turn out to be potential bargains.

Press the next page as we look at five out of contract players who are playing at the Euros this month.

Memphis Depay (Netherlands)

The Dutchman is expected to join Barcelona very soon but the transfer has not been finalised quite yet, with the player having weighed up moves to a number of other clubs.

Depay plays a pivotal role for his national team so it is a surprise that it has taken so long for a club to snap him up on a free transfer, especially as the former Manchester United forward is still only 27 years of age.

Patrick van Aanholt (Netherlands)

Depay’s teammate started the Netherlands’ opening group match against Russia, but he will officially be without a club when his contract expires at the end of this month.

Van Aanholt is now 30 so he won’t be an attractive option for teams looking to sign up young talent, but he could do a job for a Premier League club in the short term.

Robin Quaison (Sweden)

The 27-year-old’s contract at Bundesliga club Mainz expires on June 30th and he has, so far, not found another club, despite having a pretty solid season in Germany.

Quaison scored seven goals and provided five assists in 30 appearances last campaign, playing either as a winger or as a deep-lying forward. He came on as a substitute in the second half of Sweden’s draw with Spain on Monday.

Ezgjan Alioski (North Macedonia)

The fullback played the full 90 minutes as his country lost 3-1 to Austria in their first group match, but he will be leaving Leeds at the end of this month, despite starting 29 Premier League games last season.

Alioski is generally used as an attacking left-back these days, but he has been utilised as a winger and a central midfielder in the past, so he would be a useful addition to any Premier League squad.

Hakan Calhanoglu (Turkey)

Like the rest of his teammates, the playmaker was not too impressive as Turkey lost 3-0 to Italy in the opening game of the European Championships last week. He has, though, had a good season for his club.

Calhanoglu played a key role for AC Milan as the Rossoneri finished second in the Serie A table. His wage demands are, however, thought to be extremely high, which is putting off clubs from signing him up.
