FIVE Forgotten PL Stars: The Players Who Have Been Frozen Out At Their Respective Clubs

Players can fall out with their managers. Personality clashes happen in any working environment and it is the same in football.

However, being frozen out at a club is not always down to a disagreement between the player and the coach. There are other factors, including injuries, poor performances and contract issues that can lead to a footballer being left out of the matchday squad.

The stars we have listed in this article have all been sidelined for very different reasons, and it is very possible that some could yet make a first-team comeback.

Press the next page as we go through five players who seemingly don’t have a future at their respective clubs.

Ross Barkley (Chelsea)

The Chelsea midfielder had his number 8 shirt handed to Mateo Kovacic at the start of the season and he was only registered with a new number (18) near the end of the transfer window when it became clear he wasn’t leaving.

Barkley has never played under Thomas Tuchel, having been sent on a season-long loan to Aston Villa by previous head coach Frank Lampard at the start of last campaign.

Cenk Tosun (Everton)

The Turkish international cost the Toffees £27m when he arrived from Besiktas in the January 2018 transfer window but poor performances and fitness problems have hampered his time at Goodison Park.

Tosun has spent a spell out on loan at Crystal Palace, as well as previous club Besiktas, but, on both occasions, he sustained knee injuries which limited his match time.

Loris Karius (Liverpool)

After a disastrous performance in the 2019 Champions League final, Karius has been sent out on loan to Besiktas and Union Berlin, with neither move working out as planned.

Karius turned down a switch to FC Basel in the summer and he is now expected to run down his contract, which expires at the end of the season.

Eddie Nketiah (Arsenal)

The 22-year-old made 29 appearances in all competitions for the Gunners last season, but he hasn’t even made the matchday squad so far this campaign.

One of the reasons for that is due to an ankle injury Nketiah suffered in pre-season but, after refusing to sign a new contract, he is expected to be offloaded either in January or on a free transfer next summer.

James Rodriguez (Everton)

The second Toffees player to make it onto this list, the Colombian international simply doesn’t fit into new manager Rafa Benitez’s style of play, and he looked set to leave Merseyside over the summer.

However, Rodriguez was unable to agree a move before the transfer window closed and it is not certain whether he will now be reintegrated into the first-team squad.
