5 Things To Know About Robin Koch As West Ham Join Spurs In Battle For The German International

West Ham have been in contact with Freiburg defender Robin Koch’s agent, according to reports in the English media. The Hammers want to be kept informed in case any club makes a move for the centre-back.

Tottenham, Norwich and Leeds are also said to be interested in the 23-year-old, who has risen to the top of manager David Moyes’s list of summer transfer targets as he looks to reinforce the team’s defence.

Koch is the right age and profile for what the Irons are looking for, and he could be available for a reasonable price in the summer.

Koch could be available for below €20m

RB Leipzig made a bid of €20m (£17.5m) for the German in the January transfer window, which was rejected at the time by Freiburg.

However, the lack of matches being played in recent weeks due to the health emergency means the Bundesliga club will likely have to sell for below that amount in order to support their finances.

He got his first senior cap for Germany earlier this season

Koch’s impressive performances over the past two years have led to international recognition, with the defender being handed his debut for Germany in the 2-2 friendly draw against Argentina back in October.

He was also called up for the European Championship qualifiers in November, where he started the 4-0 win over Belarus.

Koch can play as a holding midfielder

The 23-year-old has been used mostly as a centre-back this season, but due to the fact he is comfortable on the ball, he has been utilised as a defensive midfielder on a regular basis by Freiburg.

Eight of Koch’s 26 appearances this campaign have been in the middle of the park, rather than as a member of the backline.

He’s tall but he is not immobile

At 6ft 3, Koch does have the height to play at centre-back in the Premier League, although he may need to get used to the physicality of English football.

He isn’t lightning quick, but he is mobile enough that he is able to play both in defence and midfield.

Koch has stated he is interested in leaving Freiburg

The German international has made it known that he wants to move on to pasture’s new if a bigger club comes in for him. Speaking about the likelihood of moving on in the summer, he said:

“No-one knows what will happen next. It is clear that I want to take the next step.”
