West Ham are one of four teams interested in signing Angers goalkeeper Yahia Fofana, according to reports in the French media.
L’Equipe claim that the Hammers are “in the running” to secure the 24-year-old’s signature, along with Torino, Ajax and PSV Eindhoven.
Fofana has had an outstanding season for Angers, having saved 12.5 goals more than his expected post-shot xG. Only one other keeper in Europe’s top 5 leagues (Stade de Reims’ Yehvann Diouf) had a better shot-stopping record last campaign.
He is also an experienced international, having been capped 18 times by Ivory Coast. He was his country’s number one as they lifted the African Cup of Nations trophy back in 2024.
Fofana has been linked with Premier League teams before
Both Chelsea and Arsenal have been credited with an interest in the keeper over the past twelve months. The Gunners were said to be keen on signing him as competition for David Raya. However, they have subsequently brought in Kepa Arrizabalaga.
The Blues, meanwhile, are focused on selling goalkeepers at the moment, with Djordje Petrovic seemingly poised to join Bournemouth.
West Ham have looked at several options as they target a new No.1
Leicester’s Mads Hermansen and Parma’s Zion Suzuki are said to be high up the list of candidates as head of recruitment Kyle Macaulay scours the market for a new shot-stopper.
However, neither Hermansen nor Suzuki will be sold for a low price. Fofana could be brought in for a more modest fee, and that is likely why his name has come under consideration.
The sale of Mohammed Kudus to Tottenham has freed up some funds for new signings but it remains to be seen how high up the list of priorities a new keeper is for Macaulay and head coach Graham Potter.
