West Ham are expected to complete the signing of Monaco midfielder Soungoutou Magassa, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Writing on his X account, Romano revealed that the Hammers are scheduling “travel and medical” for the 5-cap France international.

Magassa can play in multiple different positions, having been deployed as both a holding midfielder and centre-back during his senior career.

Last season, the 21-year-old played the majority of his games as a no.6, and it is likely he will be deployed in a similar role by West Ham boss Graham Potter.

The Irons head coach has already lost Edson Alvarez, and Guido Rodriguez is also poised to leave the London Stadium over the coming days, so Magassa would be strengthening a position that is in great need of reinforcements.

Magassa transfer details

West Ham are set to pay €17m (£14.7m) up front for the Frenchman, with another €3m (£2.6m) due in performance-related add-ons. There will also be a 10% sell-on clause.

Magassa is set to become the London club’s sixth signing of the summer after deals for Jean-Clair Todibo (who joined from Nice on a permanent basis), El Hadji Malick Diouf, Mads Hermansen, Kyle Walker-Peters and Callum Wilson.

West Ham want more than one midfielder

As mentioned, the departures of Alvarez and (potentially) Rodriguez mean that Potter has very few options in the middle of the park. Magassa is, therefore, expected to be joined by at least one more signing before the transfer window closes on Monday evening.

A bid has been made for Middlesbrough’s Hayden Hackney, while there is also said to be interest in Barcelona’s Marc Casado, Feyenoord’s Quinten Timber, Marseille’s Adrien Rabiot and Werder Bremen’s Romano Schmid. There is likely to be plenty of transfer activity until the last few hours on deadline day.
