West Ham are weighing up a move for Werder Bremen goalkeeper Michael Zetterer, according to reports in the German media.

The 29-year-old’s position as the Bundesliga side’s first-choice is said to be under threat following the appointment of new head coach Horst Steffen.

Mio Backhaus has been tipped to take the gloves instead, and Sport Bild (via Sport Witness) claim the Hammers are keeping a close eye on Zetterer’s situation.

No decision has been made by Steffen but, if Backhaus is favoured, it could hasten the exit of Bremen’s current no.1.

Zetterer could have made the switch to England last year

The German was heavily linked with a move to Manchester City before the start of last season. Ederson was keen on leaving for Saudi Arabia at the time but no team ended up matching his asking price.

Writing on his X account last August, journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Zetterer was the Cityzens’ “number one replacement option” for Ederson.

He would likely have become the backup for Stefan Ortega but he ultimately ended up staying at Werder Bremen.

West Ham are interested in several other keepers

Leicester’s Mads Hermansen is said to be high up the list of options as head coach Graham Potter seeks a new number one.

The Irons have also been in touch with the representatives of Parma shot-stopper Zion Suzuki. However, neither goalkeeper will be available on the cheap, with both valued in excess of £30m.

Zetterer would undoubtedly be a more cost-effective solution but fans will have doubts about his quality, considering he is in danger of losing his starting spot at Bremen, who finished midtable in the Bundesliga last campaign.
