There are “currently no further indications” that West Ham will make a second bid for Werder Bremen shot-stopper Michael Zetterer, according to reports in Germany,
Magazine Kicker have confirmed that an initial offer from the Hammers was “rejected” for the 30-year-old.
Since then, there has been no progress in talks, and it is assumed that Graham Potter’s side have ended their pursuit of Zetterer.
While the keeper is Bremen’s No.1, Kicker claim that no one in the Bundesliga side’s first team squad is unsellable.
In fact, Zetterer’s asking price is said to be a relatively modest €5m (£4.3m), which demonstrates how low West Ham’s opening proposal must have been.
Why have West Ham cooled their interest?
It is believed that the impending arrival of John Victor from Botafogo is the reason why a deal for Zetterer has been abandoned.
The Irons are expected to pay around €10m (£8.7m) for the Brazilian, with the 29-year-old having already said his goodbyes ahead of his transfer to the London Stadium.
Head of Recruitment Kyle Macaulay is not looking to sign two new goalkeepers, which suggests that John will be in direct competition with Alphonse Areola for starts.
Other positions are likely to be strengthened
After bringing in a keeper, the main focus for the rest of the transfer window is expected to be on reinforcing the middle of the park.
Approaches have been made for the likes of Aston Villa’s Jacob Ramsey and Southampton’s Matheus Fernandes, while there is believed to be interest in Bayer Leverkusen’s Exequiel Palacios.
A move for a new forward cannot be ruled out either. Reports in France suggest negotiations are taking place for Metz’s Idrissa Gueye, while the club have also been linked with Chelsea’s Raheem Sterling and Liverpool’s Ben Doak in recent days.
