West Ham are weighing up a move for Southampton midfielder Mateus Fernandes, according to reports.
The Sun reporter Jack Rosser claims the Portuguese Under-21 international could come under consideration if the Hammers fail to secure the services of Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott.
Graham Potter’s side are hoping to persuade the Reds into agreeing to a loan deal for Elliott, but if that doesn’t work, Fernandes could be targeted instead. Fans on X believe he would be a good addition to the squad:
Think Elliot is good but feel Fernandes of Southampton should be a priority https://t.co/u9ar5Dj6oP

What do fans need to know about Fernandes?
The 21-year-old moved to St Mary’s from Sporting Lisbon for £15m last summer and he went on to make 42 appearances in all competitions during his first year with Southampton.
Fernandes was one of the few shining lights in what was a very difficult campaign for the Saints and he has attracted suitors since the club’s relegation to the Championship.
West Ham are poised to sign another Southampton player
The Irons are expected to seal the signature of Kyle Walker-Peters on a free transfer over the coming days. The fullback has agreed personal terms after turning down a move to Turkish side Besiktas.
Walter-Peters is expected to replace Vladimir Coufal, who left at the end of the last season, and he will provide cover for Aaron Wan-Bissaka on the right-hand side.
In other news, ExWHUEmployee has confirmed that West Ham are “in talks” about a £55m double transfer
