West Ham secured a vital win against Newcastle on Sunday afternoon and one of the standout performers was Mateus Fernandes.
The Hammers paid upwards of £40m for the Portuguese midfielder in August, but he hasn’t featured that prominently since the appointment of new head coach Nuno Espirito Santo.
However, Fernandes was selected alongside Freddie Potts at the weekend, and the pair thrived. Fans on X were praising the former Southampton player after the final whistle:
Top performance indeed !

He move so quickly on and off the ball, adding such pace to his passes. He has been brilliant the last couple games

Fernandes needs a long run in the starting eleven
Both the 21-year-old and Potts showed what they are truly capable of against the Magpies. In stark contrast to the likes of Andy Irving and Tomas Soucek, they have much greater mobility and technical skill.
The pair were able to win their individual battles in the middle of the park, whilst producing moments of quality in possession.
