West Ham Face Fight To Keep “Class” Midfielder As European Giants Make ‘Contact’ With His Agents

Paris Saint-Germain have made “contact” with the entourage of West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes, according to reports in France.

Footmercato claim that talks between the two parties have taken place, with football advisor Luis Campos likely to be the driving force behind the interest.

Campos is Portuguese, and he has helped PSG sign four of his fellow countrymen – Joao Neves, Nuno Mendes, Vitinha and Goncalo Ramos – in recent years.

It should be pointed out as well that three of those players are represented by Jorge Mendes, who is also Fernandes‘s agent.

You can infer that Campos must have had a conversation with Mendes or another member of his Gestifute agency about Fernandes’s availability.

Fernandes’s performances are attracting attention

Speaking after West Ham’s 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace on Monday evening, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher singled out the 21-year-old for praise:

“He looked a class apart when you looked at West Ham tonight. Him, in terms of getting on the ball, you saw that bit of class. You could see what he was about.”

Along with PSG, the likes of Manchester United and Manchester City have also been mentioned as potential suitors for Fernandes in recent weeks.

Despite the growing interest in Fernandes, reports suggest that the Hammers are determined to retain the Portuguese international, even if they are relegated.

It remains to be seen how realistic that stance is, especially if PSG do come calling with a formal bid this summer.

In any case, Fernandes won’t be available for a low price. The club paid £42m to bring him from Southampton last year, and you can easily argue that he is worth a lot more than that now.
