Sky Sports pundit Roy Keane claims West Ham have made a very shrewd signing in Mads Hermansen.

Jamie Carragher had stated that he believes the Hammers could be in for a relegation battle this season, but Keane countered that argument by citing the addition of the Denmark international:

“No, but Jamie, listen, they’ve bought that ‘keeper from Leicester (Hermansen), he’s not bad at all, playing out from the back, remember the one before him, then he came in (and was much better).”

Hermansen signed from Leicester for £18m earlier this month and, as Keane mentions, he is an excellent fit for Graham Potter’s style of play.

Will West Ham be battling against relegation?

The arrival of Hermansen has certainly boosted morale among fans. The club’s 3 other signings – El Hadji Malick Diouf, Kyle Walker-Peters and Callum Wilson – have not inspired a lot of confidence.

Many believe that without further additions in midfield, the Irons will struggle to compete for a position above midtable, and there is a danger of being dragged into a dogfight, especially when you factor in that this group of players did not perform well under Potter during his first six months in charge.

Who else could be signed after Hermansen?

An attempt was made to buy Southampton’s Mateus Fernandes but their £30m opening bid was well below his reported asking price.

West Ham are expected to move on to alternative targets, although a lot depends on potential outgoings to increase the transfer budget. Players like Guido Rodriguez and Emerson Palmieri could leave before the window closes, but they are unlikely to bring in substantial sums. Plenty of wheeling and dealing may need to occur between now and September 1st.
