Club ‘Expects To Receive Offers’ As West Ham Eye Move For Argentinian International

West Ham have been keeping close tabs on River Plate centre-back Lautaro Rivero in recent months, according to reports in Argentina.

The 22-year-old has just signed a contract extension with his current club, which includes a $100m (£74m) release clause.

However, TyC Sports claim that River Plate “expects to receive offers” from Europe when the transfer window reopens this summer.

The Hammers and Leeds are named as the defender’s most likely suitors, with his performances this season having “sparked” their interest.

What do fans need to know about Rivero?

The centre-half came through River Plate’s youth ranks before being sent out on loan to Central Cordoba, where he made his senior debut in the Copa Libertadores against LDU Quito.

Rivero played 30 games during his loan spell before he was recalled by River Plate ahead of the Club World Cup last summer.

After establishing himself as a regular starter, he was subsequently handed his first senior cap for Argentina, playing the second half in a 6-0 friendly win over Puerto Rico back in October.

West Ham will prioritise the signing of another defender

Rivero appears to be a very promising young player. As well as having made his debut for his country in his early 20s, he has some unique attributes, including the fact that he is left-footed.

However, while the Irons are looking for a centre-back, they will have limited funds to spend on transfers, even if they do retain their top-flight status.

Keeping hold of Axel Disasi is expected to be the top priority. There is no purchase option in the loan agreement with Chelsea, and with the player attracting interest from other Premier League teams, they face a battle to sign him on a permanent deal.
