West Ham have rejected an approach from Wolfsburg for centre-back Konstantinos Mavropanos, according to Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg.
The journalist claims that the Bundesliga outfit were hoping to bring the defender back to Germany, having played for Stuttgart prior to his switch to the London Stadium in 2023.
However, the Hammers have it clear in no uncertain terms that Mavropanos won’t be leaving the club before the transfer deadline on Monday evening.
Head coach Nuno Espirito Santo is already short of options in the centre of defence, so it would not have made any sense to sanction the player’s departure.
Todibo’s suspension has handed Nuno another headache
Jean-Clair Todibo is set to serve a three-match ban for violent conduct after being sent off during the 3-2 defeat to Chelsea on Saturday night.
The Frenchman grabbed Joao Pedro around the throat following a mass brawl between the two teams in injury time.
Todibo took to social media after the match to apologise for his actions, but he will now miss two crucial league fixtures against Burnley and Manchester United, as well as the FA Cup tie versus Burton Albion. His absence would have strengthened the resolve to keep Mavropanos.
West Ham are actively looking to sign a centre-half
The main priority for the Irons prior to the transfer window closing is bringing in reinforcements for the backline.
Axel Disasi was said to be the primary target, but there have been complications in that deal. Chelsea want to sell rather than loan out the Frenchman, while the player has had his head turned by AC Milan.
Alternatives to Disasi are now being explored. An opening bid was tabled for Southampton’s Taylor Harwood-Bellis, but it was well below his reported asking price.
