West Ham have enquired about the availability of Manchester United duo Kobbie Mainoo and Joshua Zirkzee, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said that the Hammers wanted the two players on loan but the Red Devils are not currently open to letting them go in January:
“West Ham have called to understand the situation of both Joshua Zirkzee and Kobbie Mainoo, on loan of course, for six months, to give them the opportunity to play, to give them the chance maybe to go to the World Cup.”
“But at the moment from United they are not opening to any negotiation, so that’s the status of the story – nothing else is evolving about this.”
Amorim is keen to keep the two West Ham targets
Speaking earlier this month, Man United head coach Ruben Amorim made it clear that he was not open to offloading either Mainoo or Zirkzee
There are suggestions that the Reds would listen to offers for Zirkzee, in particular, with some reports mentioning a £30m price tag, but Amorim has insisted that he needs “everyone” in his current squad.
Mainoo and Zirkzee both have World Cup ambitions
As Romano mentions, the motivation behind the pair’s interest in leaving Old Trafford is due to concerns about not being selected for their country at next year’s World Cup.
Mainoo was initially reported to be on the market for £45m last summer, although it soon became clear that he was looking for a loan in order to boost his hopes of making England’s squad.
Zirkzee, meanwhile, has effectively been given an ultimatum by Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman. The forward has not been selected since November last year and Koeman has said that he is currently considering other options as the Man United star is not playing enough football.
