West Ham are one of the teams weighing up a move for Ajax centre-back Josip Sutalo, according to reports.

Following up on a report from ESPN, X account Croatian Football claim that the Hammers are monitoring the 25-year-old’s situation.

It is believed that Ajax are “willing” to sanction the sale of Sutalo if they receive a fee in the region of €25m (£21m).

The defender has been capped 26 times by his country and the fact that he is in his mid-twenties would make him an attractive target.

West Ham need to sell Aguerd first

It has been repeated many times that the Irons have to offload players before they bring in new signings this summer so any approach for Sutalo or another centre-half may have to wait until they have sold Nayef Aguerd.

Clubs in Italy, including Juventus, are said to be pursuing the Moroccan but their original proposal was reportedly a player swap with Daniele Rugani.

Conincidentally, Rugani spent last season on loan at Ajax, where he played second fiddle to Sutalo, so it is not a surprise that West Ham were not interested in the offer. Graham Potter’s side are keen to receive cash only for Aguerd, with his valuation set at £20m.

Sutalo would add depth in the centre of defence

Potter doesn’t exactly have many options in Sutalo’s position. The club were actually lucky that they were able to get through last season with just Max Kilman, Jean-Clair Todibo and Konstantinos Mavropanos at the manager’s disposal.

4 recognised senior centre-back options should be the bare minimum for a Premier League squad, and the addition of a player like Sutalo would be welcomed if the funds are made available to the recruitment team.
