West Ham Dealt Transfer Blow As Champions League Quarter-Finalist Press To Sign Key Summer Target

West Ham are in danger of missing out on Lille striker Jonathan David if reports from Italy are to be believed.

The Gazzetta Dello Sport say that the Serie A leaders and Champions League quarter-finalists Inter Milan are looking to snap up the Canadian international on a free transfer.

While an agreement with David has not been reached yet, it is believed that club officials and representatives of the forward have held talks.

The Italian side are reportedly prepared to offer the 25-year-old a five-year contract, worth €10m (£8.68m) per season.

West Ham were hopeful of landing the striker

There has been growing confidence that the Hammers were in with a chance of snapping up David, with it being claimed that other teams have been put off by his wage demands, signing-on bonus and agent fees that could amount to £30m.

From the looks of things, though, Inter are providing serious competition for the player’s signature and, considering what they can offer him in terms of titles and Champions League football, it seems unlikely that he would turn them down.

Other Premier League clubs, including Manchester United, Arsenal and Newcastle have also considered pursuing David but West Ham were thought to be his most likely destination if he made the move to England.

Are there any alternatives to David?

Head of Recruitment Kyle Macaulay has not been resting on his laurels in regards to the club’s search for a new No.9. It was reported earlier this week that several bids were lodged for Porto’s Samu Aghehowa. However, the Portuguese side are standing firm on their €80m (£69.5m) valuation.

Benfica’s Vangelis Pavlidis has also been mentioned as a potential target, while there is said to be strong interest in Ipswich’s Liam Delap, who has a £30m release clause in his contract.
