John Victor is “close to” leaving Botafogo for West Ham, according to reports in the Brazilian media.
CNN Brasil claims that the 29-year-old is keen on moving to the Premier League, and he has asked Botafogo’s management to sanction the transfer.
The Hammers have already had an €8m (£7m) proposal rejected, but there is a good chance that a follow-up offer worth €10m (£8.7m) will be accepted.
It is believed that John’s decision to request a move will lead to this deal reaching a swift conclusion, as long as other interested clubs (such as Manchester United), don’t get involved.
West Ham have been in talks to sign multiple keepers
Reports in Italy suggest that the Irons have been holding discussions with Parma about Zion Suzuki, but the Japanese international’s €30m (£26.2m) price tag is proving a big obstacle.
Leicester City’s Mads Hermansen is also high up the club’s list of targets but he could cost even more than Suzuki.
It appears a move for John has been made simply because he is the cheapest option. It is not thought that a second keeper will be brought in if the Brazilian’s switch to the London Stadium is finalised.
John would be the club’s 4th summer signing
Callum Wilson‘s move to West Ham was officially announced by the club on Saturday, with the 33-year-old signing a one-year contract. He joins on a free transfer after leaving Newcastle at the end of last month.
Graham Potter’s side have snapped up two other players this summer, Slavia Prague’s El Hadji Malick Diouf and Southampton’s Kyle Walker-Peters.
The addition of John would strengthen a key position, but it is fair to say that the calibre of signings so far have not impressed fans.
In other news, Manchester City have signalled that they are interested in reviving a move for a £60m-rated West Ham star
