West Ham have made Lille striker Jonathan David a “top target” ahead of the summer, according to The Guardian reporter Jacob Steinberg.
The Hammers have previously been linked with a move for the Canadian international but Steinberg claims that Graham Potter’s team have “revived their interest” in the player, who has scored 20 times this season.
David’s contract expires at the end of the season and he will be available on a free transfer but there are several obstacles that could stop a move to the London Stadium from going ahead.
The forward’s wage demands are said to be pretty high. The Irons are not generally known for giving out big salaries with their top earners – Jarrod Bowen and Lucas Paqueta – both taking home £150,000 a week. The fact that there is a lot of competition for David’s signature means a deal will be even tougher to pull off.
Which teams want to sign David?
Steinberg suggests that Serie A giants Inter Milan and Juventus are also interested in snapping up the 25-year-old but there is believed to be other suitors in the Premier League, in addition to West Ham.
Chelsea looked into buying David last summer, while Liverpool, Aston Villa and Tottenham are reportedly keeping tabs on his situation as well.
Have West Ham been linked with any other strikers?
Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta and (somewhat surprisingly) Manchester United’s Rasmus Hojlund have been mentioned as potential targets along with David in recent weeks.
Of course, the Hammers will also be weighing up a potential permanent deal for Evan Ferguson if the Republic of Ireland international impresses during his loan spell with the club.
From the looks of things, strengthening the frontline will be a top priority for the next transfer window.
