Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard doesn’t think that West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen is the right player to replace Mohamed Salah.
The Egyptian announced on Tuesday that he would be leaving Anfield at the end of the season after nine years.
Some pundits have tipped Bowen as Salah’s successor, but while Gerrard says he rates the Hammers talisman highly, he doesn’t think he has the ability required to fill the Reds’ no.11’s boots:
“I really like Bowen and think he is a top player, but I am not sure he is at Salah’s level to replace him.”
West Ham fans can rest easy
The fact that Bowen is now 29 years of age means the ship has probably sailed in terms of him moving to Merseyside.
Previous manager Jurgen Klopp never hid his admiration for the England international, but Hammers supporters should not be concerned about a bid being lodged from the current Premier League champions. Buy a Bowen jersey from Classic Football Shirts here.
It appears they already have a shortlist of replacements that doesn’t include Bowen. Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise, RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande, Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola and Juventus’s Francesco Conceicao are reportedly the four names under consideration.
Staying in the Premier League should be enough to keep Bowen
All bets are off if Nuno Espirito Santo’s side fall down into the Championship, but you would back the captain to stay if the club’s top-flight status is secured in the next couple of months.
Bowen has been a very loyal servant, having signed a seven-year contract renewal back in 2023. He has been at the London Stadium since moving from Hull City in January 2020, just over six years ago. He will be fully focused on making sure his club stay in the Premier League.
