West Ham are currently frontrunners to buy Roma centre-back Jan Ziolkowski, according to reports in Italy.

RomaGiallorossa (via Sport Witness) claim that the Hammers are the club most interested in snapping up the Polish international, who has been capped 3 times by his country.

Ziolkowski has not had a lot of game time since moving from Legia Warsaw last summer, having made 9 starts in total. It has led to his agents searching for a transfer away from Italy

The London Stadium is deemed a likely destination, with Nuno Espirito Santo‘s side having kept tabs on his progress for some time.

How much would Ziolkowski cost?

Roma need to raise money to balance the books before the accounting year comes to an end on June 30th, so they are open to offloading several players.

It is believed that Ziolkowski could be sold for a fee in the region of €20m (£17m), having originally had a price tag of €25m (£22m).

If West Ham stay in the Premier League, you can’t see the fee being a problem. Of course, if they drop down to the Championship, the move may well be a lot less appealing (for both sides).

West Ham will need to sign a centre-back

No matter what division the Irons are playing in next season, adding another option in the middle of defence is required.

Axel Disasi is only on loan from Chelsea, and there is no purchase clause in the agreement with the Blues.

If the Frenchman doesn’t secure a permanent switch across London, the club would be left with three centre-halves, one of which (Max Kilman) is very much out of favour.

In that context, you can understand why Ziolkowski is being considered as a potential summer target.
