West Ham Eye Move For Croatian Shot-Stopper With Areola’s Future In Doubt

West Ham are keeping tabs on Hull City goalkeeper Ivor Pandur, according to reports in Italy.

Tuttomercatoweb claim that the Hammers and Torino are tracking the Croatian, who has been in good form for the Tigers this season.

Pandur has kept 10 clean sheets in 37 matches for Sergej Jakirovic’s side, which puts him joint 5th among all keepers in the Championship.

The 26-year-old’s form has also attracted the notice of his country. He was called up by Croatia for their World Cup qualifiers against the Faroe Islands and Montenegro back in November.

Pandur was an unused substitute in both games, but he is clearly in the thoughts of head coach, Zlatko Dalic, having also been called up for their friendlies against Colombia and Brazil this week.

A replacement for Areola may be needed soon

There are doubts about Alphonse Areola’s long-term future at the London Stadium after he was dropped by Nuno Espirito Santo following the 3-2 defeat to Chelsea at the end of January.

Mads Hermansen has taken on the gloves for the last 7 Premier League games, with Areola having to be satisfied with appearances in the FA Cup.

After receiving the Save of the Month award back in February, Areola’s wife, Marion, seemingly criticised Nuno for dropping her husband:

“How ironic football can be! Just to make sure, in case you don’t, Mr Areola, that you are the first ever French goalkeeper in the Premier League that won this trophy not one but twice papapappapapapapapapapaa.”

Comparing the 2 West Ham keepers

When it comes to save ratio, Areola (67.5%) is ahead of Hermansen (64.9%), and the Frenchman wins again when we assess goals prevented. Areola has saved 0.5 fewer goals than his xG against, while Hermansen’s figure is -2.0.

For that reason, some may argue that the club should be keeping Areola, instead of replacing him with Pandur. We shall see if the club’s pursuit of the Croatian becomes more concrete over the coming weeks.
