Al-Ahli striker Ivan Toney has revealed that he did have “some clubs interested” in bringing him back from Saudi Arabia.
Both West Ham and Tottenham have been mentioned as potential suitors for the former Brentford player in recent months, but Toney said he wasn’t looking to move back from the Middle East:
“Yeah, there were some clubs interested in me. But I said I was happy here, I’m focused here, and I’ve got unfinished business to do here.”
“My main focus was on playing football, playing well, enjoying it and getting goals for my team.”
Toney has refused to rule out a Premier League return
While the England international insists he is content with life in Saudi Arabia, he did admit he was “open” to coming back to England.
Toney is on a very high salary – with some reporting he is on £400,000 a week tax-free – and his current deal at Al-Ahli expires in the summer of 2028, so he will not be available on the cheap anytime soon.
Could West Ham revive their interest in the future?
The Hammers have recruited a new number nine since cooling their interest in Toney, having purchased Taty Castellanos from Lazio for €30m (£26m) during the January transfer window. Buy a Taty poly kids T-shirt at UK Soccer Shop here
There isn’t an urgent need for another forward at this moment in time, and the cost of signing such a player would also depend on the club staying in the Premier League.
For now, any pursuit of Toney will have to be put on the back burner. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are still two points adrift of safety, and with their top-flight status still shrouded in uncertainty, no decisions will be made on future transfers.
