West Ham transfer target Harvey Elliott has admitted that he may need to leave Liverpool to match his ambitions.
The 22-year-old was named Player of the Tournament after helping England win the European Under-21 Championships but he is keen to make a similar impact at senior level:
“I love everything about the club, but at the same time, I kind of need to be selfish and see what’s best for me. I have big ambitions. I want to get in the World Cup squad. I want to keep being successful as a player.”
“It’s something I still need to review. I need to have a talk with everyone and review the situation. We have many new players who have come in, so whether it blocks the path for me, I’m not sure. It’s something I need to have a look at and decide.”
Wirtz’s arrival could limit his game time
As Elliott mentions, Liverpool have signed several new players, including one who will command plenty of minutes in his favoured position – Florian Wirtz.
The Premier League champions broke the British transfer record to secure the German’s signature and he is likely to start the season in the No.10 role. His main backup could well be Dominik Szoboszlai, leaving Elliott with limited opportunities.
Can West Ham afford Elliott?
It is believed that the Irons have held formal talks with Liverpool about signing the England Under-21 international. However, the Reds are reportedly demanding £40m, or £50m without a buyback clause.
The Merseysiders are unlikely to lower their demands either, with Elliott also attracting interest from Fulham, Brighton and RB Leipzig. At the moment, a move to the London Stadium doesn’t appear to be on the cards.
In other news, West Ham have made a “strong move” to sign a £26m rated Italian centre-forward
