Weat Ham are keeping tabs on Werder Bremen left-back Felix Agu, according to Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg.
The journalist claims that the Hammers and Fulham are “monitoring” the 25-year-old’s situation, with the player having a “release clause” in his contract worth between €8m (£7m) and €10m (£8.6m).
Agu is right-footed but he has predominantly played as a left-back or left wing-back for Bremen over the last couple of years.
He is quite attack-minded so he may only be targeted if head coach Graham Potter opts to adopt a three at the back system on a regular basis.
Emerson’s future is in doubt
With youngster Ollie Scarles having featured prominently since Potter’s appointment, it has meant that previous first-choice left-back Emerson Palmieri has been relegated to bench duties.
The former Chelsea defender has been tipped to leave the London Stadium and you would think that, if Agu does make the move to the Irons, the Italian may be offloaded during the summer transfer window.
West Ham have to play smart with limited funds
Following Tim Steidten’s departure as technical director in February, this summer will effectively be the first chance to see how Head of Recruitment Kyle Macaulay and Potter fare when conducting their own transfer business.
Money is expected to be tight with multiple sources close to the club suggesting that they are up against it in terms of complying with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules.
With that being the case, going after someone like Agu, who has a very low buyout clause, seems to be a good approach. Ironically, considering he is based in Germany, it may well be that Steidten did identify the fullback as a target before his departure, but Macaulay and Potter could be the ones to benefit.
