Ajax won’t be signing West Ham midfielder Edson Alvarez, according to De Telegraaf reporter Mike Verweij.
The Mexican international is currently on loan at Fenerbahce, but there have been reports that he could return to the Netherlands. However, while the Dutch and Turkish transfer windows are still open, Verweij posted on X to say any deal would require the player moving back to the London Stadium first, which can’t happen now the Premier League deadline has passed:
“The Turkish rumour that Ajax have made a bid for Edson Alvarez can go straight in the bin. The player, currently on loan at Fenerbahce from West Ham United, is not allowed to move directly from Fener to Ajax and would first have to ‘return’ to West Ham. That is no longer possible since Monday evening.”
Transfers/Loans involving English teams are no longer possible until June, when the next window opens.
Alvarez will stay in Turkey until the summer
The Hammers signed Alvarez from Ajax for £35m in 2023, but he was loaned out to Fenerbahce in late August. The Turkish Super Lig side do have an option to buy the player for €22m (£19m), but they are not expected to trigger the clause.
Alvarez has struggled with injuries since his move, and the departure of head coach Jose Mourinho has not helped either. He has started 13 matches in total.
West Ham will have to sell him at a cut price
The Irons were already willing to lose money on Alvarez. If Fenerbahce were to pay the purchase clause, it would have resulted in a loss of £16m.
Ajax and other interested teams would probably offer even less than that at the end of the season, so the midfielder could end up costing the club a great deal.
