West Ham have “explored the possibility” of signing Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic, according to journalist Dean Jones.

There have been reports linking the Serbian international with a move to Manchester United, but speaking to TEAMtalk, Jones denied those rumours and instead named the 4 other Premier League teams who have considered pursuing the player:

“Manchester United continue to be linked but, according to sources, there has been no meaningful progress from Old Trafford. Chelsea and Tottenham have both made enquiries, while West Ham are also understood to have explored the possibility. Newcastle, however, are one of the clubs being kept in the loop.”

Vlahovic has been in excellent form for Juventus this season, having scored 4 goals in his first 5 appearances, but he is expected to leave Turin in the not-too-distant future.

West Ham could try to sign him on a free

Vlahovic’s current deal with Juve expires at the end of the season. The Bianconeri tried to offload him in the summer, but he stayed with the Serie A club.

It means that foreign teams, including the Hammers, can speak directly with the player on January 1st in order to tie him down to a pre-contract agreement.

There is a genuine chance of securing a prolific striker on a free transfer if they can agree personal terms

Vlahovic’s salary is likely to be a stumbling block

The main reason that Juve have failed to agree a contract extension with the 25-year-old is due to his wage demands. He currently takes home close to £370,000 a week, which means he is earning the most of any player in Italy.

Considering West Ham don’t have any players in their squad who earn more than £150,000 a week, you can see why a move for Vlahovic would be very difficult to negotiate. It remains to be seen if the Serbian is willing to take a substantial pay cut.
