West Ham Eye Move For Charlie Cresswell’s Teammate But There’s An Issue

West Ham are interested in signing Toulouse defender Dayann Methalie, according to reports.

TEAMtalk claim that the Hammers are among a “cluster” of teams weighing up a move for the 19-year-old, who is teammates with another transfer target, Charlie Cresswell.

Methalie has been heavily linked with Newcastle in recent weeks, and several journalists have even suggested that the Magpies may table a bid before the January transfer window closes.

However, it appears that they could have competition for the teenager, with Nuno Espirito Santo’s side and others entering the mix.

Methalie’s recent injury may be a problem

While it appears that the left-back has plenty of interest from Premier League clubs, he has recently suffered a major fitness setback.

Methalie has undergone knee surgery, which could keep him sidelined for a while. However, it is believed that the operation was relatively minor.

That means the Frenchman may only be unavailable for several weeks rather than months.  It still raises questions about a potential offer from West Ham. The Irons need a player who can come in and strengthen the backline straight away, but Methalie’s injury and lack of experience in general would count against him.

West Ham will be a prioriting a centre-half

Even if a move for Methalie is out of the question, a move for Cresswell is likely still be under considertation as the Hammers look to reinforce the centre of defence.

At the moment, there is no indication that a move for the 23-year-old is imminent. The club’s hesitation could be down to the price tag or Nuno’s preference for another target.

Axel Disasi has been mentioned as a potential alternative. Chelsea are actively looking to offload the defender, who has been training with the Under 21s since the start of the season.
