Brighton goalkeeper Carl Rushworth could potentially be a target for either West Ham or Manchester United this summer, according to talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook.
The 23-year-old has had his path to first team football blocked by Bart Verbruggen at the Seagulls and, writing on his X account, Crook said that the keeper’s situation could be “one to watch” over the coming weeks.
With Rushworth being a young English shot-stopper, his addition would also help in terms of meeting the Premier League’s homegrown quota.
That means he could be in demand when the transfer window opens as he seeks a move away from the Amex in order to get more game time.
What do fans need to know about Rushworth?
The keeper joined Brighton from Halifax at the beginning of 2019 and he has been sent out on loan several times, having spent spells at Worthing, Walsall, Lincoln, Swansea and Hull City.
Rushworth was a regular starter at three of those teams, although an ankle injury limited him to just 3 appearances when he joined Hull for the first half of this campaign.
He was capped by England at Under 21 level when he played the first half against Japan in a friendly a couple of years ago.
West Ham have a decision to make with their keepers
Lukasz Fabianski is out of contract in June, while fans have not been convinced by Alphonse Areola’s performances over the course of the season.
Rushworth is unlikely to be brought in as the club’s new No.1 due to his lack of experience at the top level but there is a decent chance that he could be the new backup keeper if Fabianski is allowed to leave on a free transfer.
Even if that happens, though, supporters will still be hoping that a replacement for Areola is found as well.
