West Ham are set to secure the signature of ex-Newcastle striker Callum Wilson, according to The Athletic‘s David Ornstein.
The move has been in the works for several weeks but the trusted journalist has confirmed that the 33-year-old will become a Hammer:
🚨 EXCL: West Ham United agree deal to sign Callum Wilson as free agent. 33yo striker available following expire of terms at Newcastle United. England int’l joining #WHUFC on 1yr contract with heavily incentive-based salary. Medical complete @TheAthleticFC https://t.co/zr6EzlW8n9

The fact that the medical has been completed is significant, considering Wilson’s catalogue of injury problems over the past couple of years.
West Ham have protected themselves with the contract
Ornstein mentions a “heavily incentive-based salary”, which suggests that the bulk of payments will be based on appearances and (more than likely) goals.
Wilson’s fitness record means it is a risky signing, so any deal that limits the financial outlay if he does end up back on the treatment table is a shrewd move.
Several free agents/low-cost solutions had been considered
The departures of Michail Antonio, Danny Ings and Evan Ferguson had left head coach Graham Potter very short of options up front. If Niclas Fullkrug were to get injured, he would have had to rely on captain Jarrod Bowen to fill the gap.
While fans may not be too pleased with the arrival of Wilson, considering his lack of availability, the other strikers linked were not much better.
Ex-AC Milan forward Luka Jovic and Inter Milan’s Mehdi Taremi were also reportedly looked at but neither has Premier League experience like Wilson. Potter will be keeping his fingers crossed that the former Newcastle forward stays fit.
In other news, Manchester City have signalled that they are interested in reviving a move for a £60m-rated West Ham star
