Ex-West Ham boss Sam Allardyce believes Callum Wilson will end up being a “good signing” for the Hammers.

The 33-year-old scored his first for the club during the 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest before the international break, and Allardyce says the striker will come up with some big goals if he can stay injury-free:

“If you keep Wilson fit, you’ve got plenty of goals, mate. What a good signing that’ll be. You’ve got him on a free, he’s in his 30s, but if you can keep him fit—even if it’s sparingly—he will score goals. He’ll finish games off for you.”

Fans were less than enthusiastic following Wilson’s arrival at the London Stadium. He had spent most of his time on the treatment table during the last eighteen months at Newcastle, so it is understandable why there was so much resistance to him being signed.

The West Ham forward has a poor fitness record

Since the start of the 2023/24 campaign, Wilson has missed 57 games due to injuries. He has spent almost a whole year (363 days) on the sidelines over the last two seasons.

The former England international has suffered back, hamstring, chest and calf problems. While he has not suffered any setbacks since signing for the Irons, recent history suggests he won’t stay injury-free for too long.

Wilson could face Spurs this weekend

Niclas Fullkrug has sustained a calf strain on international duty. The forward missed Germany’s World Cup qualifier against Northern Ireland as a result.

He is not expected to recover in time for the London derby against Tottenham on Saturday evening, so there is a good chance that Wilson will lead the line for the first time. If he gets on the scoresheet again, supporters will be very happy indeed.
